Overview:

We spend an enormous amount of time in meetings. A manager spends around 60-90% in meetings. A non-manager, around 30%. This wouldn’t be a problem if the meetings were great. While factories produce goods, meetings produce ideas, knowledge, strategies, coherence, and decisions. At least if they are run well.

The problem is that most meetings are not run well. For some reason we have this idea that just because you have an employment in an office environment you automatically know how to lead effective, engaging meetings. That would be like saying that just because you reach a certain age, you can get behind the wheel and drive a car. Or an airplane. It’s ridiculous.

A rough calculation shows that an organization with 100 office workers will waste 27,000 hours annually on bad, ineffective meetings! Imagine the pure personnel cost, not to mention the loss of creativity, energy, and enthusiasm.

We have too many ineffective meetings in the workplace today. Meetings without a clear goal and purpose. Meetings that steal your energy. Meetings that you are invited to without any explanation to why or how you are expected to contribute. This must stop!
